“For Carson Smith to reach the majors this season, several stars need to align — most importantly, the harnessing of his control and command, as well an open spot on the Mariners’ roster. The latter could come about in several ways, either through Pryor’s inability to bounce back after injury or a potential trade situation with Tom Wilhelmsen this summer. Or, and perhaps most welcome to Mariners fans, the club will find space in the shape of one Hector Noesi.
If Smith follows the trajectory Carter Capps did last season — advancing to the major leagues in early August after 38 appearances in Jackson — the Mariners’ ‘pen will not only be a force to reckon with, but could provide a cushion for the arrival of Danny Hultzen, Taijuan Walker, and James Paxton, all of whom are projected to debut in 2013.”
